"Brazilian Day", is a party which takes place in New York and other cities around the world. It's held in the beginning of September to celebrate Brazil's independence day[1] .
It makes part of the official calendar of New York city. The event first ran in 1984 at 46th Street, which is currently known as "The Brazilian Street". And from 2009 on, Brazilian Day also takes place in Canada (Montreal, Toronto), Japan (Tokyo), United Kingdom (London) and Angola (Luanda).
As the time passed, the Brazilian Day in New York grew bigger and bigger and it moved to 6th. Avenue, on the corner of 42nd St. and 46th St., becoming one of the biggest and most famous Brazilian attractions placed out of Brazil. Presently the event takes over 25 blocks. At the party, a big crowd stands to see the spectacles and visit the stands in which are sold Brazilian food and products. Baterias de Samba (samba drum and musician groups) play in the street, and the people dance. Many Brazilian products and food items are sold in the street.
"Rede Globo" television has been broadcasting the Brazilian Day in the last years, making the party very known in Brazil.
Many Brazilian artists participate in Brazilian Day, such as Netinho and Daniela Mercury (2001); Ivete Sangalo (2003); Skank and Timbalada (2004); Araketu and Chitãozinho & Xororó (2005); Babado Novo, Sandy e Junior and Banda Calypso (2006).
The lineup for 2009 included Carlinhos Brown, Elba Ramalho, Marcelo D2 and other artists.
2010 brought the return of Carlinhos Brown, plus Zeze de Camargo e Luciano, Margareth Menezes, and other artists.
